The Importance of Moisture

Dry skin is characterized by a lack of moisture in the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the epidermis. The barrier of the skin is comprised of fatty acids, ceramides, and cholesterol. A
dysfunctional barrier cannot hold the proper amount of water and allows moisture to evaporate from the skin.

If the hydration levels are not increased in the skin, the depletion of water causes a reduction in the cohesiveness between corneocytes, the cells that make up the stratum corneum. As a result, the corners of the corneocytes turn up and eventually will scale and flake - commonly known as dry skin. The skin then becomes dry and brittle. Rough surfaces do not refract light as clearly and the healthy glow from the microcirculation is hidden by the accumulation of corneocytes. Aging skin shows an increase in dehydration and a slower recovery from damage to the skin’s surface.

Colorado Sidebar: Climbing 14ers

As a transplant from the state of Ohio, I live in awe of the beautiful mountains surrounding us here at glo headquarters in Denver, CO every day. If you visit or move to Colorado and enjoy hiking, bagging a 14-er is almost a right of passage. A few weekends ago, I finally got to conquer MY first 14-er.

For those not familiar with the term, a "14-er" is a mountain exceeding 14,000 feet. Mount Bierstadt is one of Colorado’s most popular, and easiest fourteeners. Along with Mount Evans, Bierstadt is the closest 14'er to Denver. It’s not much more than an hour outside of Denver and the easiest route only requires a 3.25 mile, 2,391 foot ascent up a class 1 trail to reach the summit.

I have to say it was am absolutely gorgeous sunny day and with being at such a high altitude, sunscreen like glotherapeutics daily defense SPF 30+ was an absolute must. Additionally, I am not one to leave the house completely bare-faced, even when summiting a mountaintop! The recently launched glominerals water resistant mascara stayed on my lashes all day long, even during the middle of the hot afternoon. This morning I am pretty sure I finished off my first container of the year and I got to thinking about some cool ways to reuse the spritzer. I came up with several ideas and I'm wondering if any glo makeup mavens out there have additional ways they reuse them! Here are mine:

Weather.com (and my mother) tell me that my North Carolina hometown is rocking 87 sunny degrees right now but here at glo headquarters in Denver, winter and spring are still playing tug-of-war. Last weekend I sat on my porch and soaked up some sunshine between piles of ice and snow (not without SPF-- I keep my complexion healthy, protected and pretty with gloPressed base in golden medium, of course!) The peek-a-boo spring days give me just the inspiration I need to try a something new to celebrate what's coming (warm weather!) Here's what I'm loving now -- fresh eyes with gloEye shadow in lilac washed over the lid and just under the brow bone, then contouring the crease with one of my favorite light browns (I'm obsessed with twig.) Sometimes I layer that over a bamboo base and I always use gloLid primer so what's pretty at 7 a.m. before work is still pretty at 6 p.m. for happy hour. It's all about spring at glo headquarters in Denver! Even though flurries fell last night, we're living in a world of rosy golds and classic neutrals. Spring has lots of perks-longer days, more sunshine, fresh flowers... but what I'm loving is soon-to-launch gloGloss in brown sugar. It's just about as perfect a shade as I could imagine. The color is a rosy natural hue with a touch shimmer that's well, just like the sugar it's named for.

December 31st is one of my absolute favorite days, or rather, nights of the year. It's New Year's Eve's no-holds-barred-get-glam-and-be-edgy style that I just love to love. And this year is no different. I've scoured Spring runway looks because if there's a night I can wear runway hair and makeup it's tomorrow! I've got some great ideas and I've pulled together some of glo's fabulous hues to take me fearlessly from 2009 to 2010. For my eyes, I'm definitely starting with gloLid primer (no girl wants a NYE eye shadow look to end up under her eyes before the ball drops.) I'm also addicted to gloCream eyeliner, which I think I'll use in sapphire for a night like this. One gloEye shadow shade I'm also throwing in is mermaid - it has just the dazzle factor a new year's night craves. What are y'all wearing out to greet 2010?

holiday's got a hold on me

The holiday spirit has got a hold of me. I'm not generally the girl who scrubs radio stations for holiday tunes the day after Thanksgiving. In fact, I'm usually the All-that-crazy-holiday-chaos-can-wait-until-at-least-mid-December girl. But this year, I can't deny that I'm tapping my foot to carols (and even seeking them out!) It started this week when my roommates and I put up and decorated a real live Christmas tree. It's a first for all of us in our post-college lives. But the holiday spirit really took hold when I did my holiday present shopping! Giving gifts is one of my favorite things in the world (of course I love receiving them too!) and this year I had so many great glo ideas! Shhh... don't tell, but both my beautiful mother and sister are getting a shimmer brick in gleam. It is one of my personal favorites and it is so versitile. It has travelled with me for all of my weekend trips because it's great for all over glo or for a little highlight here and there and even for eye shadow. I'm also giving my sister the gloTint for cheeks and lips (Self mag loves it too) -- she will love that beautiful berry hue and how easy it is to use! Ruby love

I've always gone for playing up eyes over lips but the new gloRoyal lip crayon in regal ruby might have changed all of that in the blink of an eye. Here's what happened: I was rushing around this morning snagging keys, coat, snacks etc. trying to make it out the door on time for work when the regal ruby crayon our product manager had given me caught my eye. I was feeling impulsive (also I hadn't had a chance to do much for my eyes) so I popped off the cap and slid that regal ruby crayon right on my lips. Then a glance in the mirror. And Instant love. There is something about the application (this isn't new, everyone's saying the same thing!) that makes this lip crayon a pleasure. It's smooth and soft, but it stays put. Also, the crayon allowed me to put the color just exactly where I wanted it. Then there is this color. I'm in love with the your-lips'-natural-red-only-much-better hue and the way it gave me just the bit of glamour my otherwise harried morning hadn't allowed.

Here's the bonus (and the inspiration for this post) I just walked over to the mirror three hours, a cup of coffee and a bottle of water later, and my lips are still perfectly regal ruby!

Writing a blog on Friday afternoons just about guarantees that I'll have the weekend on my mind. Today is no different, especially since I'm road-tripping down from Denver to Santa Fe, New Mexico right after work. I'll be a southwestern desert novice but here's what I'm expecting: desert reds and tans and blue skies punctuated by a little bit of that hearty green that peeks through desert landscapes. Then of course there'll be the city and the lights and the night! I just can't wait so I've put together this little ensemble of some of glo's beautiful shades that get me even more excited for the weekend.

Decision made: I'm off to Vail this weekend! It'll be my first time since I moved to Denver last month. As soon as I leave work, I'll throw some sweaters and such in my bag and fly out the door and up to the mountains. I might be heading to the great outdoors, but I won't be leaving my addiction to everything beauty behind. A girl's got to look her best even clinging to a mountain side, right? But I also don't want to lug a trunk's worth of products. So I've strategized. Here are my two pretty glominerals picks that work double duty for every look I'll need this weekend whether it's for Vail after dark or for wearing with a ponytail and boots on the trails. Fashion week finished up yesterday and my oh my what a week of beautiful colors, textures and styles! It has me completely ready to try my hand at making one of fall's "haute" looks my own. I've always been a play-up-the-eyes kind of girl (think the Enchanted Midnight Look or the Glam Look by glominerals) but I just might be ready to venture on to that bold lip that is cropping up in all chic corners of the earth this fall. I've got my eye on gloLip stick in siren, which from what Cat Tatman tells us in the great Q&A above (see it in original blog form here) will flatter my skin's warmer undertones. Not to mention, I absolutely can't resist a shade called siren.

Fashion week kicked off today in NYC! That's about as perfect an excuse as I can think of to spend a week completely enveloped in that glitzy world of haute couture. I like green eye shadows, so Fern is my favorite color, but I love to use bamboo with it. They really enhance my green eyes.

the glominerals Persimmons gloss is a pretty and natural coral color, perfect for spring and summer.

I use the Light Action Shampoo from Healium. I have fine, thin hair and it is the only product I've found that doesn't weigh my hair down. And I have tried a lot of hair products! It actually gives my hair body!

I had some smooth move hot tea - then some fresh squeezed lemon juice with maple syrup and cayenne pepper.....heard of it? LOL

Can I say the entire smoky eye kit from glominerals? That's 4 eye shadows - but oh so necessary for a sexy smoky eye.

the glominerals Pink Ginger liquid lips is the best color gloss I've ever owned. It goes over any lipstick, looks great with any lip pencil - and most importantly, looks great alone.

4. Favorite hair product:
I love the Healium shampoo and conditioner, but I think I love the Vertical Slide Cream the best. It's great for straightening my curly hair.

Pretty well, but I could have used a couple more hours.

If this is your first time visiting the glo skincare blog, welcome! We're sure everyone in town for the DNC is enjoying the beautiful weather and sights of Denver. While you are in the Mile High City, there are a few tips for staying healthy that we'd like to share:

Drink LOTS of water - it is easy to get dehydrated at higher altitudes!
Wear SUNSCREEN - it is also a lot easier to get a sunburn in the sunniest state in the nation :)
Feel dry? The air is a lot less humid here in Colorado than in lower lying states, especially those of you used to the humidity on the East Coast! Your skin is probably a lot drier than it normally is in the summertime. Try some extra moisturizer for your face and hands at least once a day, in the evenings.
In the morning, use a 2-in-1 sunscreen and moisturizer to have all your bases covered!

If you have time, stop by and visit the glo store in Cherry Creek to pick up some skincare items, and get advice for any other questions you may have! Enjoy your time in Denver!

blinc mascara - ultimate summer makeup item!

I know that we've already talked about blinc mascara in previous posts, HOWEVER - I have to admit I just now got on board and tried it for the first time, and well... I wish I had been using this mascara all summer!!! I camped 2 nights and climbed a 14er this weekend, and since this was all backcountry that meant no bath house or running water to freshen up! Since we drove up to the mountains straight from work on Friday, I figured I would have to deal with Friday's makeup slowly coming off all weekend...imagine my amazement, then, when on both Saturday and Sunday mornings, I awoke in the tent with absolutely no flaky mascara mess all over my face.

I got home Sunday evening and it was all still perfectly intact until I actually used my facewash to remove it. For a girl on the go, who still likes to look good even at 14,000+ feet, this mascara is a keeper. :)
